USS Bridge AOE 10 – History of the U.S. Navy's Fast Combat Support Ship & Navy Decals
USS Bridge AOE 10 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals
The USS Bridge (AOE-10) was a Supply-class fast combat support ship and the final ship of her class, serving the United States Navy through the post-Cold War era and the Global War on Terror and sustaining Pacific Fleet carrier strike groups with fuel, ammunition, and stores simultaneously at high speed across the Western Pacific and beyond. Named for the concept of the bridge — that most essential of structures, the span that connects two shores, that makes passage possible where none existed before, that turns obstacle into opportunity — USS Bridge embodied that concept in the truest naval sense: she was the bridge between the fleet's combat power and the logistical foundation that made that power possible, the essential link that kept carrier strike groups connected to everything they needed to fight and win at sea.
Keel, Launch & Commissioning
Bridge's keel was laid down on June 18, 1992, at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) in San Diego, California. She was launched on November 20, 1993, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on August 10, 1998, as the fourth and final ship of the Supply class under hull designation AOE-10.
Class & Design
USS Bridge was the last of four ships in the Supply class of fast combat support ships (AOE) — the most advanced underway replenishment vessels ever operated by the U.S. Navy. At 754 feet in length and displacing approximately 48,500 tons fully loaded, she was powered by four General Electric LM2500 gas turbine engines capable of driving her at speeds exceeding 25 knots — fast enough to operate as an integral member of a carrier strike group at full battle speed.
As the final ship of the Supply class and the last purpose-built fast combat support ship (AOE) commissioned into the U.S. Navy, Bridge represented the culmination of six decades of American fast combat support ship development — from the revolutionary Sacramento class of the 1960s through the next-generation Supply class of the 1990s. She could simultaneously transfer fuel, ammunition, and stores to multiple ships at her replenishment-at-sea (RAS) stations on both sides, providing the comprehensive one-stop replenishment that is the defining capability of the AOE.
Pacific Fleet Service
Homeported at Bremerton, Washington, USS Bridge served as one of the Pacific Fleet's fast combat support ships throughout her career, operating alongside her Supply-class sister ship USS Rainier (AOE-7) out of Puget Sound. She deployed to the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Persian Gulf, supporting carrier strike groups with comprehensive one-stop replenishment through the most operationally demanding years of the post-Cold War and Global War on Terror eras.
Her Bremerton homeport in Puget Sound placed her at the heart of the Pacific Fleet's logistics network, and her Western Pacific deployments kept carrier strike groups operating at full combat capability across the vast distances of the Pacific theater — from the North Pacific and Western Pacific to the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf.
Global War on Terror Operations
USS Bridge served during the Global War on Terror, sustaining Pacific Fleet carrier strike groups through sustained combat and power projection operations in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. She delivered the aviation fuel, bombs, missiles, and stores that kept carrier air wings flying strike missions over Afghanistan and Iraq through extended deployments — the essential logistical foundation without which sustained carrier-based combat operations would have been impossible.
As the last AOE in the U.S. Navy, Bridge carried the full weight of the fast combat support ship tradition during the most demanding operational period since Vietnam — sustaining the fleet at the highest operational tempo in decades, across some of the longest and most complex deployments in post-Cold War naval history.
Decommissioning
USS Bridge was decommissioned on September 30, 2011, after more than 13 years of commissioned service — decommissioned on the same day as her Supply-class sister ship USS Arctic (AOE-8), marking the end of the fast combat support ship (AOE) in U.S. Navy service. Her decommissioning closed the final chapter on the AOE — a ship type that had sustained American carrier strike groups through Vietnam, the Cold War, and the Global War on Terror across more than four decades of continuous service.
Legacy
For the sailors who served aboard Bridge — the enginemen, boatswain's mates, gunner's mates, storekeepers, and logistics professionals who kept Pacific Fleet carrier strike groups sustained through the Global War on Terror — she represents a career at the pinnacle of American naval logistics. As the last fast combat support ship in U.S. Navy history, USS Bridge carried the AOE tradition to its conclusion with the same professionalism and excellence that characterized every ship in that remarkable lineage. She was, in the truest sense, the final bridge — connecting the Navy's combat power to the logistical foundation that made it possible, for the last time, in the finest tradition of American naval service.
