USS Butte AE 27 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals

The USS Butte (AE-27) was a Kilauea-class ammunition ship that served the United States Navy for over two decades, delivering ordnance, missiles, and ammunition to fleet units operating across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and around the world. Named for the city of Butte, Montana — the legendary copper-mining city known as "The Richest Hill on Earth" — she carried the spirit of American industrial strength and hard work throughout a career defined by dangerous, essential logistical service.

Keel, Launch & Commissioning

Butte's keel was laid down on July 21, 1966, at the General Dynamics Corporation shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. She was launched on February 9, 1968, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on November 14, 1968, as the second ship of the Kilauea class under hull designation AE-27.

Class & Design

USS Butte was one of eight ships in the Kilauea class — the most capable ammunition ships ever built for the U.S. Navy. At 564 feet in length and displacing approximately 20,500 tons fully loaded, she was equipped with advanced underway replenishment systems capable of transferring the full spectrum of modern naval ordnance — conventional bombs, guided missiles, torpedoes, rockets, gunfire ammunition, and nuclear-compatible weapons — to combatants at sea at rates and volumes that far exceeded earlier ammunition ship designs.

Operating aboard Butte required mastery of complex replenishment-at-sea evolutions, constant attention to ordnance safety, and the seamanship to maintain station alongside combatants in all sea states and weather conditions.

Atlantic Fleet & Mediterranean Service

Homeported at Earle, New Jersey, USS Butte served as a primary ordnance resupply ship for Atlantic Fleet combatants throughout the Cold War. She deployed extensively to the Mediterranean Sea, supporting Sixth Fleet carrier strike groups and surface combatants with sustained ordnance replenishment that kept the fleet armed and ready through the most tense decades of the Cold War.

Her underway replenishment operations directly enabled the Sixth Fleet's sustained forward presence in the Mediterranean — one of the most strategically critical theaters of the Cold War naval competition with the Soviet Union.

Cold War & Post-Cold War Operations

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, USS Butte continued to support Atlantic Fleet and Sixth Fleet operations through a period of rapid technological change in naval warfare. She adapted to an evolving ordnance inventory — from conventional bombs and gunfire ammunition to advanced guided missiles — maintaining the reliable replenishment capability that fleet commanders depended on.

Decommissioning

USS Butte was decommissioned on August 30, 1996, after nearly 28 years of commissioned service — one of the longest careers of any Kilauea-class ship. Her nearly three decades of service spanned the height of the Cold War, the post-Vietnam restructuring of the Navy, and the post-Cold War drawdown — a career that outlasted the strategic environment that created her.

Legacy

For the sailors who served aboard Butte — the boatswain's mates, gunner's mates, and logistics professionals who transferred ordnance to Atlantic Fleet and Sixth Fleet combatants across nearly 28 years of operations — she represents a career of hard work, professional excellence, and the quiet satisfaction of keeping the fleet armed and ready. Named for one of America's toughest cities, USS Butte embodied the same grit and endurance that built the mountain West.
