USS Horne CG 30 – History of the U.S. Navy's Guided Missile Cruiser & Navy Decals
USS Horne CG 30 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals
The USS Horne (CG-30) was the fifth ship of the Belknap class of guided missile cruisers, serving the Pacific Fleet through more than two decades of Cold War service. Named for Lieutenant Commander Minthorne “Pete” Horne, USN — a pioneering naval aviator who gave his life in the early, dangerous years of American carrier aviation, when the Navy was still learning how to operate aircraft from ships at sea and every flight carried risks that today's aviators can scarcely imagine.
Minthorne Horne was among the first generation of naval aviators who took to the sky from carrier decks in the 1920s, when the techniques of carrier aviation — the approach, the arrested landing, the deck handling of aircraft — were being invented in real time, often at the cost of aviators' lives. Flying was perilous enough in that era under any circumstances; flying from a moving ship at sea, with primitive instruments, unreliable engines, and no established doctrine or procedures, demanded extraordinary skill and courage from the men who did it. Horne was one of those men — a skilled aviator who pushed the boundaries of what was possible in early carrier aviation and paid the ultimate price in service to his country and to the Navy's development of the carrier arm that would one day win the Pacific War. USS Horne honored that legacy of aviation pioneering and sacrifice throughout her Cold War career — fitting tribute from a ship whose career was spent defending the carriers that Horne and his fellow pioneers had given their lives to create.
Keel, Launch & Commissioning
Horne's keel was laid down on December 12, 1962, at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard in San Francisco, California. She was launched on October 30, 1964, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on April 15, 1967, as the fifth ship of the Belknap class under hull designation CG-30 (originally designated DLG-30, reclassified as CG-30 in 1975).
Class & Design
USS Horne was one of nine Belknap-class guided missile cruisers — the second generation of American purpose-built guided missile cruisers, combining a single-arm Standard Missile launcher forward with a 5-inch/54 caliber gun aft. At approximately 547 feet in length and displacing approximately 8,200 tons fully loaded, she carried the ASROC anti-submarine rocket system, torpedo tubes, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and the Phalanx close-in weapon system — a versatile multi-mission surface combatant well suited to the demanding Pacific Fleet operational environment.
Cold War Pacific Fleet Service
Commissioned in April 1967 — at the height of the Vietnam War — USS Horne was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, where she immediately entered the operational tempo of a Navy at war. She deployed to the Western Pacific and the Gulf of Tonkin, where Pacific Fleet surface combatants were providing naval gunfire support, surface warfare, and air defense coverage for the carrier battle groups conducting strikes against North Vietnam and supporting the broader naval effort in Southeast Asia.
Horne is particularly notable for her role as a component of the air defense network protecting the carrier battle groups operating in the Gulf of Tonkin — one of the most demanding air defense environments American surface combatants had faced since Korea, with the constant threat of North Vietnamese air attack and the need to maintain tight coordination between surface and air assets to protect the carriers whose aircraft were delivering the Navy's contribution to the air war over Vietnam.
Following the Vietnam War, USS Horne continued her Pacific Fleet career as an escort for carrier battle groups across the Pacific and Western Pacific, participating in fleet exercises, forward presence deployments, and the sustained Cold War operations that characterized Pacific Fleet surface combatant service through the 1970s and 1980s. She operated extensively from her West Coast homeport, deploying repeatedly to the Western Pacific — including periods of forward deployment that placed her at the operational center of American naval power in the Pacific during the Cold War's most consequential final decades.
Throughout her career, USS Horne served with the carrier battle groups that were the direct descendants of the carrier aviation doctrine that her namesake Pete Horne had helped pioneer with his life — protecting with missiles and guns the carriers whose power he had helped prove possible.
Decommissioning
USS Horne was decommissioned on March 28, 1993, after more than 25 years of commissioned service — a career spanning from the height of the Vietnam War through the Cold War's triumphant conclusion, encompassing the full arc of Cold War Pacific Fleet surface combatant operations.
Legacy
For the sailors who served aboard Horne — the missile technicians, sonar operators, electronics warfare specialists, and surface warfare professionals who kept this Pacific Fleet guided missile cruiser operational and ready through more than 25 years of Cold War service — she represents a career of exceptional dedication to American naval power in the Pacific. Named for a pioneer of carrier aviation who gave his life so that the Navy could learn to project airpower from the sea, USS Horne spent her career as the surface shield for the carriers whose existence Pete Horne had helped make possible — a quiet but profound tribute to the courage of the men who built American carrier aviation one dangerous flight at a time.
