USS Kiska AE 35 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals

The USS Kiska (AE-35) was a Kilauea-class ammunition ship that served the United States Navy for over two decades, delivering ordnance, missiles, and ammunition to fleet units operating across the Pacific and beyond. Named for Kiska Island — one of the remote, fog-shrouded islands of the Aleutian chain in Alaska, and the site of fierce fighting during World War II when Japanese forces occupied it from 1942 to 1943 — she carried a name steeped in American military history and the rugged spirit of the North Pacific throughout her career.

Keel, Launch & Commissioning

Kiska's keel was laid down on August 3, 1970, at the Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation in Pascagoula, Mississippi. She was launched on March 11, 1972, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on December 16, 1972, under hull designation AE-35 as the last ship of the Kilauea class.

Class & Design

USS Kiska was the last of eight ships in the Kilauea class — the most advanced ammunition ships ever built for the U.S. Navy. At 564 feet in length and displacing approximately 20,500 tons fully loaded, she was equipped with state-of-the-art replenishment systems capable of transferring the full spectrum of modern naval ordnance — conventional bombs, guided missiles, torpedoes, rockets, gunfire ammunition, and nuclear-compatible weapons — to combatants at sea with speed and precision that far exceeded any previous ammunition ship design.

As the last ship completed of the Kilauea class, Kiska represented the fully mature expression of the most capable ammunition ship concept in U.S. Navy history. Her crew mastered complex replenishment-at-sea evolutions across two decades of Pacific Fleet operations.

Pacific Fleet Service

Homeported at Concord, California, USS Kiska served as a primary ordnance resupply ship for Pacific Fleet combatants throughout the 1970s and 1980s. She deployed to the Western Pacific, supporting carrier strike groups and surface combatants with sustained ordnance replenishment that kept the Pacific Fleet armed and ready through the Cold War's most operationally demanding final decades.

Her replenishment-at-sea operations directly enabled the Pacific Fleet's sustained forward presence across the vast reaches of the Western Pacific — allowing carrier groups to remain deployed for extended periods without the operational disruption of returning to Stateside facilities for ordnance.

Cold War & Post-Cold War Operations

Throughout the late Cold War years, USS Kiska adapted to an evolving fleet and increasingly sophisticated ordnance inventory as the Navy transitioned to guided missile-dominant naval forces. She maintained reliable, professional replenishment operations through the Cold War's final years and into the post-Cold War restructuring of the Navy's combat logistics force.

Decommissioning

USS Kiska was decommissioned on August 28, 1994, after nearly 22 years of commissioned service. As the last ship of the Kilauea class to be commissioned, her decommissioning marked a significant milestone in the drawdown of the Navy's purpose-built ammunition ship force — the end of a line of ships that had kept the fleet armed through the entirety of the Cold War's final decades.

Legacy

For the sailors who served aboard Kiska — the boatswain's mates, gunner's mates, and logistics professionals who transferred ordnance to Pacific Fleet combatants across nearly 22 years of Cold War and post-Cold War operations — she represents a career of demanding, dangerous, and utterly essential work. Named for one of the most remote and historically significant islands in American territory, USS Kiska carried that legacy of hard-won, isolated, and critical service throughout her entire career.
