USS Kitty Hawk CVA 63 – History of the Legendary Conventional Carrier & Navy Decals

USS Kitty Hawk (CVA 63): America's Longest-Serving Conventional Carrier

USS Kitty Hawk (CVA 63) holds a remarkable distinction: she was the last conventionally powered aircraft carrier to serve in the U.S. Navy, and one of the longest-serving carriers in American history. For over four decades, she projected American power across the Pacific.

Ship History

USS Kitty Hawk was commissioned on April 29, 1961, at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation in Camden, New Jersey. Lead ship of her class, she was a massive conventional (non-nuclear) supercarrier displacing over 80,000 tons fully loaded.

Her service record spans some of America's most consequential military engagements:

  • 1965–1972 — Multiple combat deployments during the Vietnam War, flying thousands of strike missions over North and South Vietnam
  • 1972 — A serious onboard race riot highlighted social tensions of the era and led to significant Navy reforms
  • 1991 — Operation Desert Storm support operations in the Persian Gulf
  • 2003 — Operation Iraqi Freedom, launching strikes from the North Arabian Sea

Kitty Hawk was decommissioned on May 12, 2009, after 48 years of service — an extraordinary run for any warship. She was the last active-duty conventionally powered carrier in the U.S. fleet.

Hull Number Explained

CVA 63 designates:

  • CV — Aircraft carrier
  • A — Attack (a designation used during the Cold War era for carriers with an offensive strike mission; later dropped)
  • 63 — Her hull number

Later in her career she was redesignated CV 63 when the “A” attack designation was retired across the fleet in 1973.
