USS Mount Hood AE 29 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals

The USS Mount Hood (AE-29) was a Kilauea-class ammunition ship that served the United States Navy for over two decades, delivering ordnance, missiles, and ammunition to fleet units operating across the Pacific and around the world. Named for Mount Hood — the majestic stratovolcano that towers over the Oregon landscape and stands as the highest peak in the state — she carried that Pacific Northwest spirit of strength, endurance, and natural grandeur throughout a career of essential and dangerous logistical service at sea.

Keel, Launch & Commissioning

Mount Hood's keel was laid down on May 8, 1967, at the Bethlehem Steel Company shipyard in Sparrows Point, Maryland. She was launched on July 17, 1968, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on May 1, 1971, as the fourth ship of the Kilauea class under hull designation AE-29.

Class & Design

USS Mount Hood was one of eight ships in the Kilauea class — the most advanced and capable ammunition ships ever built for the U.S. Navy. At 564 feet in length and displacing approximately 20,500 tons fully loaded, she carried and transferred the full spectrum of modern naval ordnance — conventional bombs, guided missiles, torpedoes, rockets, gunfire ammunition, and nuclear-compatible weapons — using advanced underway replenishment systems that allowed faster and higher-volume transfers than any previous ammunition ship design.

Every replenishment-at-sea evolution aboard Mount Hood demanded precision seamanship, rigorous ordnance safety discipline, and the ability to maintain close station with combatants in open ocean conditions at all times.

Pacific Fleet Service

Homeported at Concord, California, USS Mount Hood served as a primary ordnance resupply ship for Pacific Fleet combatants throughout the 1970s and 1980s. She deployed to the Western Pacific, supporting carrier strike groups, cruisers, and destroyers with sustained ordnance replenishment that kept the Pacific Fleet armed and ready through the final decades of the Cold War.

Her replenishment-at-sea operations were a cornerstone of Pacific Fleet forward presence — enabling carrier groups and surface combatants to sustain extended Western Pacific deployments without the operational disruption of returning to Stateside facilities for ordnance replenishment.

Cold War & Post-Cold War Operations

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, USS Mount Hood adapted to the rapidly evolving ordnance requirements of the Cold War fleet, keeping pace with the transition from conventional bomb-heavy carrier air wings to the missile-dominant surface and air forces of the late Cold War era. She maintained reliable, professional replenishment operations through the Cold War's final years and into the post-Cold War drawdown.

Decommissioning

USS Mount Hood was decommissioned on September 30, 1996, after more than 25 years of commissioned service. Her quarter-century career spanned the post-Vietnam rebuilding of the Navy, the Reagan-era buildup, and the post-Cold War restructuring — a testament to the enduring value of reliable combat logistics in sustaining naval power.

Legacy

For the sailors who served aboard Mount Hood — the boatswain's mates, gunner's mates, and logistics professionals who transferred ordnance to Pacific Fleet combatants across more than 25 years of operations — she represents a career of dangerous, demanding, and absolutely essential work. Named for one of the most iconic peaks in the American West, USS Mount Hood stood as tall and steady as the mountain that inspired her name.
