The USS Niagara Falls (AFS-3) was a Mars-class combat stores ship that served the United States Navy for over three decades, delivering provisions, repair parts, aviation stores, and general supplies to fleet units operating across the Pacific and around the world. Keel, Launch & Commissioning

Niagara Falls' keel was laid down on May 22, 1964, at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) in San Diego, California. She was launched on March 26, 1965, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on April 29, 1967, as the third ship of the Mars class under hull designation AFS-3.

Class & Design

USS Niagara Falls was one of seven ships in the Mars class of combat stores ships (AFS) — the most versatile replenishment vessels of the Cold War era. At 581 feet in length and displacing approximately 16,500 tons fully loaded, she could carry and deliver in a single replenishment evolution the complete range of fleet stores: aviation and ship spare parts, general stores, provisions and refrigerated food, clothing and small stores, and consumables of every kind.

Equipped for both alongside replenishment and vertical replenishment (VERTREP) via helicopter, Niagara Falls could simultaneously support multiple combatants with exceptional efficiency — a capability that made her one of the most valuable logistics assets in the Pacific Fleet.

Pacific Fleet Service & Vietnam War Support

Homeported at Subic Bay, Philippines and later Oakland, California, USS Niagara Falls served as a frontline combat stores ship for Pacific Fleet combatants throughout the Vietnam War and the Cold War. Her forward homeport at Subic Bay placed her at the heart of the Navy's Western Pacific logistics network during the Vietnam era, allowing her to provide rapid, sustained support to carriers and surface combatants conducting operations in Southeast Asian waters.

During the Vietnam War, Niagara Falls kept carrier strike groups and surface combatants stocked with everything they needed to sustain combat operations — from aircraft spare parts and aviation ordnance accessories to food, uniforms, and consumables that kept crews operational through extended deployments.

Cold War & Post-Cold War Service

Following Vietnam, USS Niagara Falls continued to serve Pacific Fleet combatants through the 1970s, 1980s, and into the 1990s — one of the longest-serving combat stores ships in U.S. Navy history. She adapted to the evolving requirements of a changing fleet while maintaining her core mission of comprehensive at-sea logistics support across three decades of operations.

Decommissioning

USS Niagara Falls was decommissioned on April 28, 1994, after more than 27 years of commissioned service. Her nearly three decades of Pacific Fleet support made her one of the most experienced and enduring combat stores ships of the Cold War era.
