USS Nitro AE 23 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals

The USS Nitro (AE-23) was a Nitro-class ammunition ship that served the United States Navy for over two decades, delivering ordnance, missiles, and ammunition to fleet units operating across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and around the world. Named for the city of Nitro, West Virginia — itself named for the nitrocellulose explosives manufactured there during World War I — she carried a name that was synonymous with firepower throughout a career of essential and dangerous logistical service.

Keel, Launch & Commissioning

Nitro's keel was laid down on May 20, 1957, at the Bethlehem Steel Company shipyard in Sparrows Point, Maryland. She was launched on June 25, 1958, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on May 1, 1959, as the lead ship of the Nitro class under hull designation AE-23.

Class & Design

USS Nitro was the name ship of the Nitro class of ammunition ships, an improved design over the preceding Suribachi class that incorporated lessons learned from early Cold War replenishment operations. At 512 feet in length and displacing approximately 15,500 tons fully loaded, she was equipped to carry and transfer a full range of naval ordnance — bombs, missiles, rockets, gunfire ammunition, and pyrotechnics — to combatants at sea via replenishment without requiring either ship to enter port.

Serving aboard an ammunition ship demanded exceptional discipline and seamanship. Every replenishment evolution carried inherent risk, and the crew of USS Nitro met that challenge with professionalism on every deployment.

Atlantic Fleet & Mediterranean Service

Homeported at Earle, New Jersey, USS Nitro served as a primary ordnance resupply ship for Atlantic Fleet combatants throughout the Cold War. She deployed extensively to the Mediterranean Sea, supporting Sixth Fleet carriers, cruisers, and destroyers with a continuous flow of ordnance that kept the fleet ready for sustained operations at the height of the Cold War competition with the Soviet Navy.

Her replenishment operations were a linchpin of the Sixth Fleet's sustained forward presence — allowing carrier strike groups to remain on station in the Mediterranean for extended periods without returning to stateside or European port facilities for ordnance replenishment.

Vietnam War Era & Cold War Operations

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, USS Nitro operated in support of Atlantic Fleet and Sixth Fleet operations during some of the most tense years of the Cold War. Her consistent and reliable delivery of ordnance to fleet units across the Atlantic and Mediterranean kept American naval power credible and sustained during a period of intense superpower rivalry.

Decommissioning

USS Nitro was decommissioned on February 22, 1980, after more than 20 years of commissioned service. She had served through the full arc of the Cold War's most operationally demanding decades, delivering millions of pounds of ordnance to Atlantic Fleet and Sixth Fleet combatants across two oceans.

Legacy

For the sailors who served aboard Nitro — the boatswain's mates, gunner's mates, and logistics professionals who transferred ordnance to fleet units at sea in all weather conditions — she represents a career of skilled, hazardous, and indispensable work. The ammunition ship community is the backbone of sustained naval combat power, and USS Nitro, named for the explosive energy of her city's wartime legacy, embodied that mission throughout her career.
