USS Orion AS 18 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals

The USS Orion (AS-18) was a submarine tender that served the United States Navy through the Cold War and into the post-Cold War era, providing comprehensive basing, repair, and support services to submarine squadrons over a remarkably long career. Named for Orion — one of the most magnificent and recognizable constellations in the night sky, the great hunter of Greek mythology whose belt of three brilliant stars has guided navigators and sailors across the world’s oceans for thousands of years. In mythology, Orion was the greatest hunter who ever lived — a giant of extraordinary skill, strength, and determination, placed among the stars by the gods after his death, where he stands forever with his belt, his sword, and his hunting dogs Canis Major and Canis Minor, chasing the Pleiades across the celestial sphere for eternity. For navigators at sea, Orion’s Belt has been one of the most reliable celestial navigation references in the night sky, providing a fixed bearing that guided ships across the oceans before the age of electronic navigation. USS Orion carried that legacy of guidance, steadfastness, and the hunter’s relentless pursuit of his mission throughout one of the longest careers in submarine tender history.

Keel, Launch & Commissioning

Orion’s keel was laid down on February 28, 1942, at the Moore Dry Dock Company in Oakland, California. She was launched on October 4, 1943, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on January 30, 1944, under hull designation AS-18.

Class & Design

USS Orion was a submarine tender (AS) — a large, highly capable floating base designed to provide comprehensive maintenance, repair, supply, and support services to submarine squadrons at home port and forward operating bases. She carried crews of skilled machinists, torpedomen, electronics technicians, battery specialists, and other submarine maintenance professionals equipped with torpedo workshops, machine shops, battery maintenance facilities, and every other technical capability required to maintain and fully support a submarine squadron through sustained operations.

Over her long career, Orion supported the full arc of American submarine evolution — from the diesel-electric fleet of World War II and the early Cold War through the nuclear-powered submarine force that became the cornerstone of American strategic deterrence, and into the late Cold War era of Los Angeles-class fast attack submarines and Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines.

World War II Service

Commissioned in January 1944, USS Orion deployed to the Pacific, joining the forward submarine support infrastructure during the final, decisive phase of the Pacific submarine campaign. She provided basing, repair, torpedo loading, and comprehensive support services to Pacific Fleet submarines from advance bases as the campaign against Japanese shipping reached its most devastating effectiveness in 1944 and 1945.

Her machine shops and torpedo workshops kept submarines in fighting condition through successive war patrols, contributing to the campaign that ultimately sank more than 1,300 Japanese merchant ships and played a decisive role in Japan’s defeat. By keeping submarines operational and turning them around quickly between patrols, Orion maximized the time submarines spent in their patrol areas and multiplied the devastating effectiveness of the Pacific submarine force.

Cold War Service

Following World War II, USS Orion remained in continuous service for the Pacific Fleet through an extraordinary Cold War career that spanned four decades. Homeported at various Pacific Fleet installations including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and Apra Harbor, Guam, she provided comprehensive basing and maintenance services to Pacific Fleet submarines through the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and the full arc of Cold War submarine competition with the Soviet Navy.

Over her long Cold War career, Orion supported submarines through the complete transformation of the Pacific submarine force — from the postwar diesel-electric fleet through the introduction of nuclear power in the late 1950s and early 1960s, through the deployment of Polaris ballistic missile submarines in the 1960s, and through the Los Angeles-class fast attack submarines of the 1970s and 1980s. Few ships in Navy history witnessed and supported as comprehensive a transformation in their assigned force as USS Orion did over four decades of submarine tender service.

Decommissioning

USS Orion was decommissioned on September 30, 1994, after more than 50 years of commissioned service — one of the longest careers of any ship in the history of the United States Navy. Her half-century of service spanned World War II, the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and the full Cold War from beginning to end, making her one of the most historically significant and enduring vessels in American naval history.

Legacy

For the sailors and submarine specialists who served aboard Orion — the machinists, torpedomen, electronics technicians, and nuclear-trained maintenance professionals who kept Pacific Fleet submarines battle-ready through more than 50 years of World War II and Cold War service — she represents a career of extraordinary dedication and endurance. Like the constellation that bears her name — standing fixed and faithful in the night sky for millennia, guiding navigators home — USS Orion stood fixed and faithful for more than 50 years, guiding the submarine force through the full span of American naval history from the Pacific War to the end of the Cold War.
