USS Pyro AE 24 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals

The USS Pyro (AE-24) was a Nitro-class ammunition ship that served the United States Navy for over two decades, delivering ordnance, missiles, and ammunition to fleet units operating across the Pacific and around the world. Named for the Greek word for fire — pyr — she carried a name that captured the explosive nature of her mission: keeping the fleet armed and ready to fight.

Keel, Launch & Commissioning

Pyro's keel was laid down on November 21, 1957, at the Bethlehem Steel Company shipyard in Sparrows Point, Maryland. She was launched on November 5, 1958, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on July 24, 1959, as the second ship of the Nitro class under hull designation AE-24.

Class & Design

USS Pyro was one of two ships in the Nitro class of ammunition ships, an improved generation of ordnance replenishment vessels built to support the growing complexity of the Cold War fleet. At 512 feet in length and displacing approximately 15,500 tons fully loaded, she was equipped to carry and transfer a comprehensive range of naval ordnance — bombs, missiles, rockets, gunfire ammunition, torpedoes, and pyrotechnics — to combatants at sea via replenishment rigs while both vessels maintained speed and station.

The replenishment-at-sea evolution demanded precision seamanship, constant vigilance, and a crew fully trained to handle hazardous cargo in open ocean conditions. USS Pyro's crew met that standard on every deployment.

Pacific Fleet Service & Cold War Operations

Homeported at Concord, California, USS Pyro served as a primary ordnance resupply ship for Pacific Fleet combatants throughout the Cold War. She deployed extensively to the Western Pacific, supporting carrier strike groups, cruisers, and destroyers with sustained ordnance replenishment that allowed the fleet to remain forward-deployed without interrupting operations to return to port.

Her replenishment missions were a cornerstone of the Pacific Fleet's sustained combat power — keeping carriers armed for strike operations and surface combatants stocked with gunfire ammunition across the vast distances of the Pacific theater.

Vietnam War Support

During the Vietnam War, USS Pyro played a vital role in sustaining the combat power of fleet units operating in Southeast Asian waters. Carriers conducting sustained air strike campaigns and destroyers providing gunfire support along the Vietnamese coast required a constant and reliable flow of ordnance, and Pyro delivered — keeping the fleet armed through one of the most sustained naval combat operations since World War II.

Decommissioning

USS Pyro was decommissioned on October 1, 1982, after more than 23 years of commissioned service. She had served through the full sweep of Cold War Pacific operations, from the early missile age of the late 1950s through the Vietnam War era and into the early 1980s — one of the longest-serving ammunition ships in the Cold War Navy.

Legacy

For the sailors who served aboard Pyro — the boatswain's mates, gunner's mates, and logistics professionals who transferred ordnance to fleet units at sea in all conditions — she represents a career defined by skill, discipline, and the quiet pride of keeping the fleet ready to fight. The ammunition ship community is the unseen backbone of naval combat power, and USS Pyro — true to her fiery name — kept that flame burning across two decades of Cold War service.
