USS Rainier AOE 7 – History of the U.S. Navy's Fast Combat Support Ship & Navy Decals
USS Rainier AOE 7 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals
The USS Rainier (AOE-7) was a Supply-class fast combat support ship that served the United States Navy through the post-Cold War era and the Global War on Terror, sustaining Pacific Fleet carrier strike groups with fuel, ammunition, and stores simultaneously at high speed across the vast reaches of the Western Pacific. Named for Mount Rainier — the majestic 14,411-foot stratovolcano that dominates the skyline of the Pacific Northwest, the highest peak in the Cascade Range, and one of the most iconic natural landmarks in America — a mountain whose snow-capped summit is visible from Seattle, Tacoma, and much of western Washington State, and whose name derives from the British naval officer Rear Admiral Peter Rainier. Mount Rainier is a mountain of extraordinary presence and power, and USS Rainier carried that same commanding presence throughout her career of essential service to the Pacific Fleet.
Keel, Launch & Commissioning
Rainier's keel was laid down on May 23, 1990, at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) in San Diego, California. She was launched on September 28, 1991, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on January 21, 1995, as the second ship of the Supply class under hull designation AOE-7.
Class & Design
USS Rainier was one of four ships in the Supply class of fast combat support ships (AOE) — the next-generation replacement for the legendary Sacramento class and the most technologically advanced underway replenishment vessels ever operated by the U.S. Navy. At 754 feet in length and displacing approximately 48,500 tons fully loaded, she was powered by four General Electric LM2500 gas turbine engines capable of driving her at speeds exceeding 25 knots — fast enough to operate as an integral member of a carrier strike group at full battle speed.
Like all Supply-class AOEs, Rainier could simultaneously transfer fuel (F-76 diesel and JP-5 aviation fuel), ammunition and ordnance, and dry and refrigerated stores to multiple ships at her replenishment-at-sea (RAS) stations on both sides — the comprehensive one-stop replenishment capability that made fast combat support ships the crown jewel of the Navy's combat logistics force. Her gas turbine propulsion provided improved reliability and reduced crew requirements compared to the steam-powered Sacramento class she replaced.
Pacific Fleet Service
Homeported at Bremerton, Washington, USS Rainier served as the Pacific Fleet's fast combat support ship for carrier strike groups throughout her career — an appropriately Pacific Northwest homeport for a ship named for the Pacific Northwest's most iconic mountain. She deployed to the Western Pacific and Persian Gulf, supporting carrier strike groups with comprehensive one-stop replenishment that kept the Pacific Fleet fueled, armed, and stocked through the post-Cold War era's most operationally demanding years.
Her Bremerton homeport placed her at the heart of the Pacific Fleet's logistics network in Puget Sound, and her Western Pacific deployments kept carrier strike groups operating at full combat capability across the vast distances of the Pacific theater — from the North Pacific to the South China Sea to the Persian Gulf.
Post-Cold War & Global War on Terror Operations
USS Rainier served through the most consequential transformation in American naval operations in decades, sustaining Pacific Fleet carrier strike groups through the Balkans operations of the late 1990s, the response to the September 11 attacks, and sustained combat and power projection operations in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean during the Global War on Terror.
During the Global War on Terror, Rainier kept carrier air wings flying strike missions over Afghanistan and Iraq by sustaining the carrier strike groups that operated in the North Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf — delivering the aviation fuel, bombs, missiles, and stores that made continuous combat air operations possible across months-long deployments far from any friendly port.
Decommissioning
USS Rainier was decommissioned on October 29, 2011, after more than 16 years of commissioned service. Her decommissioning came as part of the Navy's ongoing restructuring of its combat logistics force in the fiscal environment of the post-2008 defense drawdown.
Legacy
For the sailors who served aboard Rainier — the enginemen, boatswain's mates, gunner's mates, storekeepers, and logistics professionals who kept Pacific Fleet carrier strike groups sustained from the post-Cold War era through the Global War on Terror — she represents a career of essential and demanding service at the pinnacle of naval logistics. Named for one of the most powerful and commanding natural features of the Pacific Northwest, USS Rainier matched that mountain's enduring strength and steady presence throughout her career — always there, always delivering, for every ship in the strike group that needed her.
