USS Samuel Gompers AD 37 – History of the U.S. Navy's Destroyer Tender & Navy Decals
USS Samuel Gompers AD 37 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals
The USS Samuel Gompers (AD-37) was a Samuel Gompers-class destroyer tender that served the United States Navy for more than two decades, providing critical repair, maintenance, and logistical support to destroyer and frigate squadrons operating across the Pacific and beyond. Named for the legendary American labor leader and founder of the American Federation of Labor, Samuel Gompers, she embodied the spirit of skilled craftsmanship and hard work that defined the tender community.
Keel, Launch & Commissioning
Samuel Gompers' keel was laid down on July 9, 1964, at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. She was launched on May 14, 1966, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on July 1, 1967, as the lead ship of her class under hull designation AD-37.
Class & Design
USS Samuel Gompers was the name ship of the Samuel Gompers class, a new generation of destroyer tenders designed to support the Navy's increasingly sophisticated Cold War fleet. At 643 feet in length and displacing approximately 20,500 tons fully loaded, she was significantly larger and more capable than the older Dixie-class tenders she supplemented. Her advanced repair facilities could service the complex electronics, weapons systems, and propulsion plants of modern destroyers and frigates — a floating industrial complex capable of handling nearly any repair short of a dry-dock overhaul.
Cold War Pacific Service
Homeported at San Diego, California, Samuel Gompers became a cornerstone of the Pacific Fleet's support infrastructure during the height of the Cold War. She conducted numerous deployments to Subic Bay, Philippines, Western Pacific waters, and other forward locations, keeping destroyer and frigate squadrons operational far from home port.
Her skilled crew of machinists, electricians, hull technicians, and electronics specialists could repair virtually anything — and frequently did, working around the clock to return ships to operational readiness on tight timelines.
Vietnam Era Support
During the Vietnam War era, Samuel Gompers supported destroyers and frigates involved in gunfire support, escort, and patrol operations in Southeast Asian waters. The ability of a tender to keep ships in theater — rather than routing them back to Stateside shipyards for repairs — was a significant strategic asset, and Samuel Gompers delivered on that mission consistently.
Later Service & Decommissioning
Samuel Gompers continued to serve throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, adapting to an evolving fleet as the Navy transitioned from gun-armed destroyers to missile-equipped surface combatants. She was decommissioned on July 2, 1991, after 24 years of commissioned service, as the post-Cold War drawdown reshaped the Navy's support force structure.
Legacy
For the sailors who served aboard Samuel Gompers, she was more than a ship — she was a community of craftsmen who took enormous pride in their work. Every destroyer that left her side fully repaired and ready for sea was a testament to their skill and dedication. The Samuel Gompers carries on the tradition of the tender force: the quiet professionals who keep the fleet ready to fight.
