USS San Diego AFS 6 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals

The USS San Diego (AFS-6) was a Mars-class combat stores ship that served the United States Navy for over two decades, delivering provisions, repair parts, aviation stores, and general supplies to fleet units operating across the Pacific and around the world. Named for San Diego, California — one of the most storied naval cities in American history and home to one of the largest concentrations of U.S. military assets anywhere in the world — she carried a name synonymous with American sea power throughout a career of comprehensive and professional at-sea logistics support.

Keel, Launch & Commissioning

San Diego's keel was laid down on March 11, 1966, at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) in San Diego, California — the same shipyard that built all seven ships of the Mars class. She was launched on April 13, 1967, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on May 24, 1969, as the sixth ship of the Mars class under hull designation AFS-6.

Class & Design

USS San Diego was one of seven ships in the Mars class of combat stores ships (AFS) — the most capable and versatile underway replenishment vessels of the Cold War era. At 581 feet in length and displacing approximately 16,500 tons fully loaded, she could carry and deliver in a single replenishment evolution the complete range of fleet stores: aviation and ship spare parts, general stores and consumables, provisions and refrigerated food, clothing, and small stores.

Equipped for both alongside replenishment and vertical replenishment (VERTREP) via helicopter, San Diego could simultaneously support multiple combatants with exceptional logistics efficiency — a capability that made her one of the most operationally valuable ships in the Pacific Fleet's combat logistics force.

Pacific Fleet Service

Homeported at Oakland, California, USS San Diego served as a frontline combat stores ship for Pacific Fleet combatants throughout the Cold War. She deployed to the Western Pacific and supported carrier strike groups and surface combatants with the full range of fleet stores needed to sustain extended operations far from Stateside bases.

Named for the Navy's home on the West Coast, San Diego represented the connection between the fleet's shore establishment and the sailors operating thousands of miles from home — delivering the stores, provisions, and supplies that kept ships and crews ready to carry out the Navy's global mission.

Cold War & Post-Cold War Service

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, USS San Diego continued to support Pacific Fleet combatants through the late Cold War era, adapting to the evolving requirements of a changing fleet while maintaining her core mission of comprehensive at-sea logistics support. She remained a reliable and professional presence in Pacific Fleet logistics operations through the Cold War's final years.

Decommissioning

USS San Diego was decommissioned on February 28, 1992, after more than 22 years of commissioned service. Her decommissioning came as the post-Cold War Navy began restructuring its combat logistics force in response to the Soviet Union's collapse and a smaller, differently configured fleet.

Legacy

For the sailors who served aboard San Diego — the storekeepers, aviation boatswain's mates, culinary specialists, and logistics professionals who kept Pacific Fleet combatants sustained across more than 22 years of Cold War operations — she represents a career of professional excellence and the pride of serving aboard a ship that bore one of the great names in American naval history. USS San Diego brought her city's naval legacy to sea and upheld it through every deployment, every replenishment, and every year she served.
