USS Suribachi AE 21 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals

The USS Suribachi (AE-21) was a Suribachi-class ammunition ship that served the United States Navy for more than two decades, delivering ordnance, missiles, and ammunition to fleet units operating across the Pacific and around the world. Named for Mount Suribachi — the volcanic peak on Iwo Jima made forever famous by the iconic flag-raising photograph of February 23, 1945 — she carried one of the most powerful names in American military history throughout a career of quiet but essential service.

Keel, Launch & Commissioning

Suribachi's keel was laid down on November 14, 1955, at the Bethlehem Steel Company shipyard in Sparrows Point, Maryland. She was launched on November 2, 1956, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on November 17, 1956, as the lead ship of the Suribachi class under hull designation AE-21.

Class & Design

USS Suribachi was the name ship of the Suribachi class of ammunition ships, purpose-built to support the Navy's transition to a jet-powered, missile-armed fleet that required a vastly increased and more complex ordnance supply chain. At 512 feet in length and displacing approximately 15,500 tons fully loaded, she was designed for underway replenishment — transferring ammunition, missiles, bombs, and other ordnance to combatants at sea without requiring either ship to enter port.

Operating an ammunition ship demanded exceptional seamanship and discipline. The cargo was inherently hazardous, and the underway replenishment evolution — with ships traveling in close formation at speed while connected by transfer rigs — required precision from every member of the crew.

Pacific Fleet Service & Cold War Operations

Homeported at Concord, California, USS Suribachi served as a primary ordnance resupply ship for Pacific Fleet combatants throughout the Cold War. She conducted numerous deployments to the Western Pacific, delivering ammunition and missiles to carriers, cruisers, destroyers, and other fleet units operating across the Pacific theater.

Her replenishment operations kept the Pacific Fleet's surface combatants and carrier strike groups armed and ready without the need to return to port — a critical capability that directly extended the operational reach and sustained combat power of the fleet.

Vietnam War Support

During the Vietnam War, USS Suribachi played a vital logistical role, delivering ordnance to fleet units supporting combat operations off the coast of Vietnam. Carriers launching strike missions and destroyers conducting gunfire support required a continuous supply of bombs, rockets, naval gunfire ammunition, and missiles — and ammunition ships like Suribachi made that sustained combat tempo possible.

Decommissioning

USS Suribachi was decommissioned on January 31, 1979, after more than 22 years of commissioned service. She had served through the transition from conventional to nuclear carrier operations, the Korean War era, and the entirety of the Vietnam War — a career that spanned some of the most operationally demanding decades in the history of the U.S. Navy.

Legacy

For the sailors who served aboard Suribachi — the boatswain's mates, gunner's mates, and logistics specialists who transferred millions of pounds of ordnance to fleet units at sea — she represents a career of dangerous, demanding, and absolutely essential work. The ammunition ship community rarely makes headlines, but no carrier can fly combat missions without them. USS Suribachi, named for one of the most hallowed battlefields in American history, served that mission with pride.
