USS Vulcan AR 5 – History of the U.S. Navy's Repair Ship & Navy Decals
USS Vulcan AR 5 – History, Service Record & Navy Decals
The USS Vulcan (AR-5) was the lead ship of the Vulcan-class repair ships — one of the most remarkable and specialized vessels in the United States Navy, a floating machine shop and repair facility capable of overhauling, repairing, and restoring fleet combatants to full fighting capability without requiring them to return to a shore-based shipyard. Named for Vulcan — the Roman god of fire, the forge, and the metalworking arts, the divine craftsman of Olympus who fashioned the weapons and armor of the gods, including the shield of Achilles and the thunderbolts of Jupiter — a name that could not have been more perfectly chosen for a ship whose entire purpose was the craft of metalworking, repair, and restoration. Just as the mythological Vulcan kept the gods' weapons ready for battle, USS Vulcan kept the Navy's fleet ready for war throughout a career spanning World War II, the Cold War, and beyond.
Keel, Launch & Commissioning
Vulcan's keel was laid down on December 16, 1939, at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation in Camden, New Jersey. She was launched on December 14, 1940, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on June 16, 1941 — just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor would plunge the United States into World War II, under hull designation AR-5.
Class & Design
USS Vulcan was the name ship of the Vulcan class of repair ships (AR) — large, highly capable floating repair facilities designed to provide comprehensive maintenance, overhaul, and battle damage repair to fleet combatants operating far from shore-based shipyards. At approximately 529 feet in length and displacing approximately 16,200 tons fully loaded, she carried a crew of skilled machinists, electricians, welders, pipe fitters, and other technical specialists equipped with machine shops, foundries, electrical repair shops, optical shops, and virtually every other workshop capability needed to repair a warship from stem to stern.
A repair ship's value to the fleet was extraordinary — by providing comprehensive repair capability at an advance base or anchorage, an AR allowed battle-damaged or mechanically failed combatants to be restored to fighting condition without the weeks or months of transit time to and from a shore-based shipyard. This capability was never more critical than in wartime, when every day a combatant spent out of action for repairs was a day the fleet fought without it.
World War II Service
USS Vulcan served throughout World War II as one of the Navy's most valuable logistics and support assets in the Pacific. She provided repair services to fleet combatants across Pacific advance bases and anchorages, restoring battle-damaged and mechanically failed ships to fighting condition as the Navy drove across the Pacific toward Japan through some of the most intense naval combat in history.
Her machine shops and repair facilities worked around the clock to keep the fleet operational through the island-hopping campaigns that characterized the Pacific War — from Guadalcanal through the Central Pacific drive to the Philippines and Okinawa. The ability to repair ships at forward anchorages rather than sending them back to Pearl Harbor or the West Coast saved weeks of out-of-action time for combatants that the Navy desperately needed at the front.
Cold War Service
Following World War II, USS Vulcan continued her career as a repair ship through the early Cold War, providing repair and maintenance services to Atlantic Fleet combatants. Homeported at Norfolk, Virginia, she served as a floating repair facility for the Atlantic Fleet through the 1950s and 1960s, keeping fleet combatants operational and ready through the Cold War's demanding early decades.
Decommissioning
USS Vulcan was decommissioned on September 15, 1991, after 50 years of commissioned service — one of the longest careers of any ship in U.S. Navy history. Her half-century of service spanned from the eve of American entry into World War II through the Cold War's conclusion, making her one of the most enduring and historically significant vessels in the history of the United States Navy.
Legacy
For the sailors and skilled tradesmen who served aboard Vulcan — the machinists, electricians, welders, pipe fitters, and technical specialists who kept the fleet's ships repaired and battle-ready across 50 years of World War II and Cold War service — she represents a career of extraordinary technical skill and essential service. Named for the god of the forge, USS Vulcan was the Navy's forge — the place where broken ships were made whole again, where battle-damaged combatants were restored to fighting condition, and where the technical excellence of the American sailor was most completely expressed. Her 50-year career stands as one of the great achievements in the history of American naval service.
